What is a Bottle Oven?

The Potteries Bottle Oven - the dominant and characteristic feature of the north Staffordshire Potteries for more than 250 years


The bottle oven: a huge, brick-built, bottle-shaped structure, up to 70 feet (20 metres) high, essential in the pottery-making process. There four main types of bottle oven in the Potteries of North Staffordshire.  

Each type had its own particular purpose, but they all had the bottle-shaped chimney stack.
